Life on the Run
In this picture are Josef Mengele's drawn and captioned sketches from South America.
After the war, Josef Mengele escaped a British internment hospital and, with the help of false papers flew to Buenos Aires, Argentina from Rome, Italy. One of the most wanted Nazi war criminals, major rewards were offered for Mengele's capture. In November 1959, Josef was naturalized as a citizen of Paraguay. Mengele was sought by the German Government after 1962, but all attempts to capture him or bring him to trial were failed. During Josef's life in South America he worked on farms in Argentina and as a carpenter. People like Geza and Gitta Stammer took Josef in. In 1985, after the Israelian government offered a large reward for information leading to Mengele's capture, it was said that Josef Mengele was most likely dead. It was said he died in a swimming accident in Embu, Brazil, February 1979. It wasnt't until July 1985, that Josef Mengele's body was exhumed and autopsied by an international panel of forensic pathologist. His body was exhumed under the name of Wolfgang Gerhard, which was one of the many false names Josef used. DNA concluded that this body was his. Josef Mengele had eluded his captors for 34 years.
