The Angel of Death at Auschwitz
This picture shows the train tracks that lead into Auschwitz
When Josef was badly injured and unable to fight in the war, he volunteered to work in concentration camps. Josef was then sent to Auschwitz to be a doctor. Josef Mengele was responsible for choosing who gets gassed upon arrival. Josef was a familiar face on the platforms where the trains let people off. Survivors recall Mengele being immaculately dressed. Josef was known for his cruelty. When a blockhouse of 750 women became infested with lice, Josef ordered all of them to be gassed and the house be destroyed. Another story states that he gassed a whole train of Jews becuase a mother refused to be seperated from her daughter and attacked a guard. However these stories weren't how Josef got his infamy. Josef Mengele's experiments were how he gained his infamy and his nickname "The Angel of Death". Josef Mengele did most of his experiments on children. Before he did his experiments on them, he would do his best to calm them. Josef gave them fresh clothes and sweets. Most of his experiments were conducted on twins. Josef's experiments included injecting of gasoline and chloroform, conjoining twins, blood transfusions, and sex changes. Most of his notes and findings were destroyed because of the destruction of camps to escape. Josef Mengele was said to be responsible for 400,000 deaths at Auschwitz and to have experimented on 3,000 sets of twins.
